Meaningful day/ 8:35 PM
It was ages ago since I last did any community service. Somehow, a call from Tai On last night made me ponder and decide to do something good this weekend. I thought it was like a SOS call cos his friend was eagerly seeking volunteers for today's event as they were obviously understaffed. After some consideration, I decided to dedicate my time to do volunteer service with people from West Coast YEC and the elderly from St Andrew's Home for the Aged. I had original plans of meeting with my fdc mates to celebrate the birthdays of Xinhe and Philip over a K-box session@ orchard. Really sorry for bang seh-ing them. Thank goodness they were understanding and I was even more touched that Boonkian initiated coming over to help out as well after their K-box session. I thank them for their kindness but they had sufficient help today already so I didn't want to bother them coming all the way from town. As I was told of a very jialat situation last night, I feared for the worst. Tai On told me to pull whoever I can so I just mass msg the people on my hp. I can't express how much gratitude I felt towards those who actually wanted to come and help out like my colleagues Jacqueline and Hayley. Even for those who couldn't make it, no prob man...it's the thought that counts too eh?
It felt all too familiar doing services today. Besides the majority familiar RV faces, another thing was the stint I had a couple years back with Yuhua YEC. It really rocks to have friends turning up to show support in your events and the best thing is that they enjoyed themselves too. Hope I didn't gave Huifang too much trouble as a volunteer with my corny jokes and jibes every now and then. It certainly didn't help since I've got Junlin and Jianhong to join me in the jokes and jibes part.
As a hokkien, I'm pretty ashamed that I didn't grasp my dialect well. It was a pitty, otherwise I could have spent more time talking cock with more elderly. Some of them could understand mandarin and english so it wasn't all too bad. Raised by a teochew Ah Ma, my strength for the dialect certainly surpassed many be it understanding or speaking. It was inevitable that while trying to speak hokkien, my teochew dialects will spill out subconciously, causing my listener to become super confused with what I was trying to say. Fortunately, I had a couple of teochew elderly to flaunt my ability to. That's what you get for talking cock with your Ah Ma for 21 years.
Spent some time playing silly games and balloon sculpturing with them. It was a refreshing experience personally cos it's my 1st time doing the balloon scuplturing as well! Other than that, I spent most of the time talking cock to the elderly and spilling more nonsense with my half-past-six hokkien, creating a crowd of hokkien elderly with question marks all over their faces.
Went to West Coast park with them for a meal @ Macdonald's. After a stroll, it was time to go back. There was a few aunties who kept saying "thank you" or "gam xia" to me towards the end of the day. Well, I don't deserve that sort of compliments. All I did was just spend my time with them and the most important thing was that they had a good time with us and hopefully, that made their day. It boils down to people willing to listen to them, talking to them and at times, bring them out for a stroll to take a look at the pleasant sceneries out there. These little acts will brighten their lives a lot more =)
